Oh Man I am sorry to hear that I had an Issue last dec where I restarted the
laptop and I got an error saying Vista could not boot and I had to do a
Restore/ recovery or basically a factory reboot bringing it back to what it
was when I bought it the July before.
I used another computer and looked up all the info on being able to do this
function and save all my 1000's of music files ,pics, doc, I do a lot of
music playing, etc so I had about 200 gigs on it. I found out that there is a
bug and if you try to take all your files and folders like you should save
them to a DVD or a few and then reinstall all items once the
restore/recovery is done. The computer gets confused and 99% of the files a
vaporized.
I was so mad as I took about 6 hrs making the discs to save all the
expensive files,programs,recording software etc.
SO I would suggest if you have valuable non-replaceable items on your drive
to figure a way to get it off without using the Microsoft recommended way.
That was about 8 months ago so they may have fixed it but who wants to
destroy all their info to find out.
Good luck

Most of us have figured out that an external hard drive is far easier to
use to back up large amounts of data...

Safer, too.
