Keep XP or check the Software Compatibility list for your software, whether
it runs on your machine if you install Vista!

On a 32bit OS, only 4 gigs of ram is supported.
But when you run your software on a 64bit OS, there might be lots of
problems.
One (cheap) way out is that you run Vista OS, 64 bit and run XP in a
(microsoft) virtual (XP) machine on your Vista machine.
