I had the same problem using Windows 2000 SP4 and your prescription worked
for me. Some Notes,
Microsoft Networks Client should be added to the network connection used for
the Windows Update. Use Control Panel, Network and DialUp Connections,
select the network connection used, and access properties-Networking to add
the Client.
The software distribution folder is in \Windows\SoftwareDistribution
I had to boot up in Safe Mode to get rid of all of it.
I cleaned out the internet / history / cache files for the Internet Explorer
using its Menu Bar Tools / Internet Options / General / Delete Files.
This history was no great loss as it cleaned out out all the trashey sites
someone may have visited here in the recent past.
Thank you for this guidance and I remained distressed that the only
Microsoft posting on error x80240020 is something about loging on as
Administrator to perform updates. That did not solve my problem.
