1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:
Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)
2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:
Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.
3. Go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Install any software required
(e.g., ActiveX Control), if any, then click on CONTINUE| Select CUSTOM &
scan | Uncheck/deselect KB905474 & IE8 and hide them both ("Don't show me
this update again").
4. Start the Automatic Updates service:
Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start

NB: KB905474 is frequently updated; However, it has always been and remains
an Optional update which you do NOT need to install. But if Automatic
Updates (AU) is set to the Automatic or Download but Notify configurations,
High Priority updates such as KB950474 and IE8 will be downloaded by
default. To avoid this in the future, select AU's Notify Only setting.
After doing so, you will have to (a) approve which updates are downloaded,
(b) which updates are installed and (c) when they're installed. See

There is one drawback to the Notify Only setting: Once you've approved which
updates are to be download, you will not see the AU icon telling you that
"updates are ready to be installed" until ALL approved updates have
downloaded. There are times when a lot of updates, various Service Packs
(e.g., Windows; Office), and an IE upgrade are being offered and this demand
can "swamp" the update servers. If and when this happens, it may take 7-10
days (if not longer) for all approved updates to download. If such is the
case and you go to shut down your computer, the normal TURN OFF button may
have been replaced by an INSTALL UPDATES AND TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER button.
This means that some of the approved updates have downloaded and are ready
to be installed. However, you will NOT be able to see or know which updates
they are, trumping items (b) and (c) in the above paragraph.
