Hey Menno,
Well this problem has existed for as long as I remember, so it's like there's anything
particularly (newly) wrong with the service. As a quick fix, just have them both delete you
off their contact lists, and then you'll need to delete them off yours. First, make note of
the Windows Live ID somewhere. Then hit the Alt key to bring up the menu bar, choose the
Tools menu, then Options, then Privacy category, right-click the contacts and choose the
Delete option. If the Delete option is grayed out, then they haven't removed you from their
contact list yet or you need to sign out/in to get it to refresh.
Once you've got them removed, you can then re-add the contacts as you would normally. They
should appear online and all should be well again.
Regarding the message delay right now -- if they are appearing to you as offline (either the
bug or setting the status, doesn't matter), messages to these contacts will be sent as
offline messages when an active connection times out. When that happens, they get delayed or
get bounced sometimes as we all know. Up until maybe a month ago, I actually thought this
problem with offline messages had been finally nailed, but it's been noticeably bad again
lately (at least for me).
