If your system is loaded with malware / spyware, the very first thing is to clean it up ---- before attempting Windows Update. Get this system clean first.

You are highly urged to follow the steps at

http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

<http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm>

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Security

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=5878

http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_R...:_Introduction

{paraphrasing 'Robear' }
HijackThis utility
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip)
can be used to help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware.

**Post your log to http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7,
or other appropriate forums for expert analysis, not here.**

Once your system is clean, if you have Windows Update issues, you must provide any Error code from your windowsupdate.log file , and which updates are at issue.
Post an *extract* from the log, but only for the very last failed session(s).
Use Notepad or Wordpad and open & look at the Windows Update log file
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log or C:\WINNT\WindowsUpdate.log

Scroll down all the way. Get / copy / paste (ideally, put into a file & attach in reply back here) the set of lines for (today's ) the last session.

(If you get a message that log file is in use.... if you have Word, you can open the file by using Read-only option).

See KB 902093 How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Also, just to get the Error from update history:
Go back to Windows Update, but then select View update history. (When you first get to website for Microsoft Update-Windows Update, look at left-hand column, under Options. Press "Review your update history".)
If this is on V6 of Windows Update, you should be able to click on that error note (the red X), and see some info.

Thank you for responding........but as I said....WITHOUT the updates....the
adware removal tools will not work---will not load....so I did as you
suggested. I went to the sites you said...I still cannot load them properly.
So---I installed the updates again....and still nothing. The directions you
gave were clear...but I am not that computer savvy to do all this alone. I
give up. Thanks.

You really have given us insufficient detail to help. Exactly what problem
are you having? Be explicit: quote the exact text of any error number or
error message, or describe exact symptoms.

Hello Damion,

a) You should not give up.
b) You should visit one of the forums I listed for further help.
c) I am unclear as to the meaning or context when you say "without the updates". Please explain.

d) Download cleanup tools on a working pc, and then burn to DVD or put on a USB flash drive, then copy & install on the problem pc.

You can run antivirus utilities (and the other cleanup tools) in Safe mode (and later repeat in Normal mode).
Simply make sure you download tools & updated definitions from a clean pc --- not the suspect machine.

Sysclean would be a good first run for virus check. Just be sure to also run other spyware / malware checks.
Get SYSCLEAN from Trendmicro and run it.

Hi and thank you.......

Here is what is happening:
Once the Updates have been downloaded and installed, Outlook Express does
not repond and I cannot open any of the emails......the address book will not
load from Outlook Express......the entire system is sluggish and non
reponsive....I have to use the Task Manager to quit programs....I cannot load
ANY adware removal tools withoutteh updates, so even if I remove the
updates...I am back again to square one. There are no error messages that I
am recieving. Does this information help in any way? Thanks again!

Damion, you said, "Once the Updates have been downloaded and installed..."

List the updates you are referring to.

Thanks again---doing as you have suggested right now. I will let you
know.....oh yes---when I say "without the Microsoft updates...meaning all of
the most recent updates....if I remove them the system itself seems to work
beautifully. It is when I install them that I have a big problem.
Unintalling them has made teh system work much better....but without the
updates....the adware tools do not seem to function properly. THANKS!

Did you disable your anti virus auto scan before installing the updates?

This is a known problem with update 911567. For the work-around, see:

This sounds more like a malware infection. You need to completely disinfect
your PC before attempting to trouble-shoot Windows Updates problems.

What do you mean by this? I cannot think of any reason why adware removal
tools would require you to install Windows Updates.

This is not the right forum for the best advice on disinfecting from
malware. We can best advise on problems with Windows Updates. We can't
really help with Windows Updates problems if your PC has a malware
infection: that needs to be sorted out first.
