Hi Keith,

They added the "Automatic Folder Type Discovery" feature to help users
by automatically changing the folder template to match with the files.
It was suppose to make things more convenient, but we see how that went.
(haha) Luckily this feature can be disabled. Method two in this tutorial
will show you how to disable it. The download option is the easiest
since you will most likely need to reset the folder view settings to.

Brink - as per the tutorial, you set the All Folders to "Not Specified"...
could it be given a value so that the default is a template of choice (as I
said above, mine seems to be Photos and Videos - I would like it to be "All
Items).

What values correspond to the existing Folder Templates?

Hi Julian,

Thank you. That sparked a good idea.

Here is what I have so far:
NotSpecified = All Items folder template
Contacts = Contacts template
Music = Music Details template
Documents = Documents template
Pictures = Pictures and Videos template

I updated the tutorial to reflect this. See step 20.

Excellent! Which only leaves the question why, since I already have
"NotSpecified" set, folders such as C:\SYSPREP (which I have never knowingly
customised before) or even C: itself (whose view cannot be "customized")
appear as "Pictures and Videos"?

Something else is still going on I guess... but this is another step forward!

Is there perchance a secret "AllItems" (or "All Items") option as well - so
that it is explicitly rather than implicitly "All Items"? Would it make a
difference???

Keep up the good work!!!

BTW - why do your posts (and nobody else's I have seen) always lose their
line breaks when viewed in the forum (at
windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/...; Firefox 2.0.0.9) -
only to reappear when one replies?

Julian (Flint) ,

Your "C:\Windows\(System32 or SysWOW64)\sysprep" may have been affected
when you made a change to another folder view of the same template type.
I notice that pops up sometimes before it needs a reset.
I still have not narrowed down exactly what causes Vista to lose it's
memory or messes up the folder views. I did notice that some utility
programs that have a option to clean or clear anything with the "folder
view" cache or "window size/location" cache will mess the folder view
settings up. (EX: CCleaner) It can simply be resolved by unchecking the
option.

The "NotSpecified" is for the "All Items" template. I did the download
reset and did a logoff and logon. Every folder view type template I have
was set to "All Items". You might try changing it to something else,
then back to "NotSpecified", after the reset has been done, to see if
that makes a difference for you. The changes are immediate., but I
would close all Windows Explorer windows to not have to worry about
doing a refresh.

I am not sure what you mean by losing the line breaks in my posts.
Could you post a link to an example so I can see it?

Let me know how it goes for you. Perhaps we can get this problem
cracked for good.

How odd... I said I was using Firefox 2.0.0.9 so I thought I'd see what it
looked like in IE7 where, hey presto! your posting looks perfectly normal!

Come to that, the whole "page layout" is different between IE7 and Firefox
(I am tempted to conclude that MS actually sends different HTML if it detects
Firefox in use...?)

I guess you don't use Firefox... download it and have a look at this thread
<g>

FYI I don't have CCleaner and AFAIK don't have any other "utilities" that
might mess with the views...

I'll think about doing a reset at the weekend... I'll lose everything if I
throw away the MRUYBags and at least *some* of my folders *usually* look the
way I want them at the moment! (isn't that a ringing endorsement of Vista's
Folder Templates!)

Thinks... perhaps I could export the MRU bags and if it all goes pear-shaped
re-import?

One other thing that bugs me - what determines how a template appears? I am
fairly sure that I thought - stay with me here! - that however a view was
set, it effectively redefined the template (as long as there was one), but I
am also fairly sure I have seen templated folders immune to changes to the
view made in another folder of that type...

I just love the transparency of the whole Folder View/Template thing, don't
you?

....and is there any way of having disconnecting the Preview pane from folder
views/templates? I have noticed that it seems to be either on or off - and
whilst it's "essential" for e.g. Fonts folder, it's a pain in most other
folders (esp. since there don't seem to be preview handlers for Office 2002
docs... <sigh> I could preview in XP OK... what are the chances, he asked
expecting the answer "none", that XP preview handlers could be "ported"
somehow to Vista?)

BTW, I looked at the keys in the MRU Bags and there appears to be
interesting stuff.. except that it's not clear which bag applies to which
folder, otherwise I would say the fix for overly dynamic views was to set up
your own "template folders" - exprort the keys and then dynamically modify
the export to apply to a folder of choice!

More later perhaps...

Again thanks for the good work on behalf of the rest of us!

there

Yes, if you export all the keys that are changed in the reset, then yo
can delete the changes and import the old keys back to restore to it t
the way it was before. When I apply the this reset, I usually never hav
a problem again with the folder view settings, unless I go poking aroun
and change something I shouldn't just to see what happens. :geek: LO

A template is determined by what type of files are in it. I notice
that if "Automatic Folder Type Discovery" is enabled, that the "Al
Items" template seems to get trumped by any other template when a fil
is added to it that is different. (EX: music file in a program folder

This is the buggy part of Vista. Sometimes there will be no problems
but sometimes a change on one folder type template will affect anothe
one of the same type without saying for "All Folders" or "subfolders"

Sorry, the Preview Pane is a part of the folder view type templates.
The "Contacts" template seems to be the only one that you can have i
turned on for without affecting the other folder view type templates.
Otherwise, like you said, it is either on or off for all of the others

I have not tried to use XP preview handlers or know how, but I woul
imagine that they may not mix to well considering the differences in th
design. It might be worth a reinstall to see though. ;

I looked in the MRU Bags to, but there is so much stuff there it i
hard to determine what goes with what. Whenever I have a few months of
in a row, I may try to sort it all out to see what I can find. (LOL)
Hopefully I can decipher the mess
