That probably means that your Search tool isn't set up correctly. You may need to enable More settings... (or Advanced settings... etc.) to ensure that you can find *any* file on your machine. Another possibility is that you aren't starting with the right drive or if you have the right drive you aren't allowing it to search all folders, etc. > >> Also do a search of files which were modified the day you tried >> the update which contain that cmd string. > how would I go about that ? More advanced settings in your search tool. I am only familiar with NT4 and XP. Never used W2K. Is there a Help for it? E.g. in XP I just pressed Win-F and F1 to bring up "Search Companion overview" In NT4 IIRC there was also a Help but the options were much more obvious IMO anyway since it used tabs instead of XP's quirky now-you-see-'em now-you-don't side-bar options. The functionality is identical; so I imagine that you will have it too in your OS. You'll just have to experiment a bit. The essential idea is that you just restrict your search to one day by making the date range which undoubtedly is supported somehow just have the same begin and end. A related option you should have is the ability to search for text within files. In that case you could enter cmd as the text you want to search for and again restrict your date range to the one day that the update was attempted. Doing that you would hope to be able to find some diagnostics from your update attempt which were related to the new version of cmd.exe There is another feature of XP's search which you may not have but which could be useful for you and that is that it can search for files within .zip and .cab file archives. Even so, if you can search those file types for containing strings you may get a clue about what files they contain and then use other tools to expand them to see if they really do contain the files you need. Etc. > > appreciate your help. > > Seamus M > > Good luck Robert --- |

Yes. See my comments above. A problem is that this isn't the log of the update that should have updated cmd.exe. Where is it? Updating when something is already broken often results in a bigger mess to try to untangle than one would have had if one had just stopped to repair first. > > thanks > for your help. > > seamus m HTH Robert --- |

The date shown at the beginning of that log file does not make sense to me and I did have McAfee turned off temporarly. perhaps for now I should concentrate on finding the missing cmd.exe file. otherwise things will get too complicated. > A problem is that this isn't the log of the update that > should have updated cmd.exe. When I do a search for files containing `cmd.exe` on the dates I attempted the manual update I find a single text file. I guess I am stuck without any info on cmd.exe ? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > > some (basic?) questions: > > 1. should I be in touch with MS support directly about this ? > If you prefer. nope. just curious as I have never had any reason to get help before. You know where the cmd.exe is. What we want to know is where is the update to it, or the uninstall information for that update, or the log for that update? Try searching for 841533 instead and see what you get. Also since your computer's date may be suspect you had better not rely on that date range filter for now. One additional filter which might be appropriate would be *.log in the filename field. Good luck Robert --- |

Hi Robert,

I have had no luck in tracing the cdm.exe file. I can find lots of files that contain it but no cmd.exe although I can run it from Start >Run.... I think that I am a bit out of my depth plus I am away for a few days. Once I get back I will contact MS ( for the first time) and see if they have any ideas. many, many thanks for your help and patience. regards Seamus |
