Hi, Steve;

I'm guessing that you are using Millennium. Give the steps in this article
a try:

Hi, Steve;

No problem. This can also be caused by having a corrupted System Restore
configuration. The easiest way to fix that is to boot with your StartUp
diskette and then deleting the whole _Restore folder. You will lose all
your System Restore points, but chances are they are not in good condition
anyway. Here's how:

1. Boot with your Millennium StartUp diskette. If you don't have one, see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/267287
2. After booting is complete, type this then press Enter: C:
3. At the C:\> prompt type this+Enter: attrib -R -S -H _RESTORE
4. At the C:\> prompt type this+Enter: deltree _RESTORE

Remove the floppy and boot back into Normal Windows.

Not stupid, Steve. Everyone has a bit of nervousness when doing some
computer "self help" things for the first time.

Here are more detailed steps to accomplish the chore of cleaning up the SR
folder:

1. Insert the floppy Startup diskette you created; Restart the computer
2. When the menu appears, select #3. to start without CD-ROM support
3. When that completes you will see the A:\> prompt. Type this then press
Enter: C:
4. The prompt will change to "C:\>"
5. Type this then press Enter: attrib -H -S -R _RESTORE
6. In a second or so you will be back to the C:\> prompt
7. Type this then press Enter: deltree _RESTORE
8. You will be asked if you are sure. Press the "Y" key.
9. Remove the floppy and press Ctrl-Alt-Del to Restart the computer.
10. You will note that the _Restore folder is recreated when you boot back
into Millennium, and one new SR point is created.

Hopefully you will now be able to install the update(s) that gave you the
initial error condition.

***Note for step #1 above: If your computer does not boot from the floppy
diskette but instead boots back into Millennium, post back with that info.

If it is like most CD's supplied by the computer maker, using the Restore CD
that came with your system will wipe everything off your computer. You will
lose all your data, all your files, all your updates, everything. Not a
good idea. <g>

No bother, Steve. That's why we have these newsgroups, so we can help each
other work out issues like this.

Either order will work. These remove the System, Hidden, and ReadOnly
attributes from the folder. Be sure to include the minus in front of each
one, and separate them with spaces as I did when typing them into the
earlier message.
