Where did you find Add/Remove Programs in Vista?

I can find where Windows Defender is displayed as an
installed program in "Control Panel" > "Programs" but I do
not have Windows Defender listed, nor the option to remove
it, when I move on to "Programs and Features" where
"Uninstall" and/or "Change" are options when you select the
programs listed there.

Are you sure you removed Windows Defender in Vista? My
installation does not give such an option!

But his statement about the Add/Remove Programs only makes
sense if there happens to be one in an 'upgrade' from XP to
Vista. There is no Add/Remove Programs, per say, in Vista
as there is in XP.

Right, it is.

But Windows Defender can not be removed (at this time). It is a protected
system resource. In a pure Vista install it is not listed in Vista
add/remove, or anywhere else for removal purposes.

You CAN turn it off!

You run the upgrade advisor from the DVD. It tells what may have a problem.
Then YOU uninstall the program or drivers *before* you install Vista.

I did run the upgrade advisor and I believe I dealt with all of the programs
it advised me of. If I missed the advise on Defender, well so it goes.

That being I still need to fix defender. If anyone has any suggestions that
will help me move forward, I would appreciate it.

Well Mark, you uninstalled a remnant from Windows XP that happens to be
duplicated in Vista. Therefore, you inadvertently hurt Vista. I am surprised
that Microsoft didn't foresee this possibility.

A reinstall of Vista will likely be necessary at this point as there is no
mechanism to install Windows Defender separately.

As your system is already hosed, why not download Defender from the
Microsoft website? Try to install it on Vista. It probably won't work, but
you have nothing to loose at this point.
