If I did an 'Upgrade' install at this point, what do you think the
consequences would be to other applications (e.g. Office 2003, Adobe
products, Nero 7,...)

Although the "upgrade" is a supported method, doing so is a
bit like playing with fire - sometimes you get burned and
sometimes you don't. And, sometimes there is a smoldering
ember that eventually bursts into flames with no advance
warning.

The safest method, and by far the most recommended, it to
completely wipe out any previous installations and do a
complete installation to avoid problems that might be
incurred because of conflicts with residual software,
drivers, .dll's, etc.

If you use a competent imaging program prior to trying anything, you know
you can always go back to the way the system is now.

TrueImage HOME 10.4 in compatible with Vista. It costs about $50.00

I am using it now with Vista.

Richard,

It will NOT work. I've tried several times. I have the same problem, in
that I had a copy of Windows Defender showing in the Programs list and
uninstalled it. Now I know HOW built-in Windows Defender is in Vista. I
should NEVER have been done this way.

Anyway, I can not re-install Windows Defender. When I attempt such the
installer program tells me Windows Defender is built-in, so it won't install
it!

Currently, I cannot turn Windows Defender on. I get this message when I try
to:

"Windows could not start the Windows Defender service on Local Computer.

Error 0x80092003: An error occurred while reading or writing to a file."

I cannot install, uninstall or turn it on. And Microsoft, in their infinite
wisdom, failed to make Windows Defender a user controlled component!
