Jonathan,
I don't think the real problem has been addressed. What I would suggest
doing is to navigate to
http://home.live.com/ and adjust your profile
settings.
The bots harvest your contact information quite easily, but the user needs
to be a bit tech savy and edit their profile. This will prevent the bots from
seeing their data.
The interface on home.live.com is horrible for non-technical people. I would
suggest that someone relook at the page and make it a bit more user friendly.
The default settings seem to be setup to communicate with about every social
network on the planet.
Also, the permissions are wide open and their set to allow anyone to see
your information, which is not a good idea in this day and age. More and more
criminals are harvesting these data tidbits and using them as ammo. More data
about you that I can gather the better. Especially if I am after some
countries classifed data.
As for JOE AVERAGE, it's just another vector to distribute various forms of
malware for those people who click on the URL. I can imagine some housewife
being exploited by some sexual messages directed torwards here husband. The
angry housewife clicks the link and wham instant keylogger has been
installed. Next hubby comes home and their fighting over something that never
occured and hubby is suddenly checking his bank account later that evening
looking at his $$$.
Meanwhile Joe Hacker has extracted all his funds and now everyone is happy.
NOT A GOOD SECURITY BEST PRACTICE MICROSOFT!
Think before you leave this vector wide open....
