Hi NewScience . . . thanks for responding.
I did a search (hidden and system files and folders included) for *.bkf but
it returned no results so that I couldn't perform a comparison with
NTBackup.exe. But I have 2 NTBackup.exe files, one in Windows/System32 and
the other in Windows/ServicePackFiles/i386.
The reason I'm asking these questions is because it seems that my pc does
things twice at start up, i.e., the Windows logo with the moving scroll line
underneath it with the black screen appears, blinks off for about 10 seconds
and comes back on and starts all over again. Bootup takes about 5 minutes
and shutting down (saving my settings) takes about the same amount of time.
I ran some tests to determine my computer's performance. The Benchmark test
showed that my Minimun Transfer Rate is 2.4mb/sec, Maximum 54.1mb/sec with an
Average of 43.6mb/sec. Access Time is 15.0 ms. Burst Rate is 78.2mb/sec and
CPU usage is 15.0%. My pc is 4 years old and I've used it like a workhorse
so I expect that these are pretty good readings. The Error scan showed that
I had only 1 damaged cell (40G hdd). However, the Health Test showed that
the Reallocated Sector Count = Current-253, Worst-253, Threshold-63, but
Status-OK. The Current and Worst numbers are very high, which I understand
means that my pc might not have much time left.
I run CCleaner, PC onPoint, RegSeeker, ChkDsk, Defragmenter, Dial-A-Fix
(flush DNS, Repair Permissions, Purge SFC, Process Idle Tasks, Flush
SoftwareDistribution, Register dll's, etc, so I keep it clean. I also run
antivirus/malware/spyware/adware programs at least once a week (Spybot S&D,
Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, and Ad-Aware), and I use AVG and
Windows Defender that perform scans everyday. Every few months, I run a
Panda Scan, Bit Defender, and TrendMicro Housecall. Several times one or
another of the programs has found a virus or a trojan and they were placed in
a "vault" and I deleted them in Safe Mode. I'm almost always on my computer
.. . . it's like we're joined at the hip, and it just doesn't seem to respond
to clean-ups like it used to. It's runs a little faster for a very short
period of time and it get sluggish within a few hours.
So I have some concerns. I was hoping that the Windows NT files were
causing the problem and I was going to delete them if they were, and now it
turns out that I have two sets of them. Then I found the two Windows Genuine
Advantage files.
Could these duplicate files be causing a double boot and a loop while running?
Can I delete the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Windows Genuine Advantage folder?
Can I delete one of the NTBackup.exe files?
