I have a very similar problem to Stephen W.
After installing the MS security updates KB899587, KB893756, and KB896727,
on my Dell Dimension 3000, the system would boot to a blue screen with the
error message " Stop: {bad image checksum wininet.dll is possibly corrupt,
checksum doe not match the computed checksum."
I am running XP Home and and was up to date with updates prior to this
problem.
The situation was corrected by copying a version of wininet.dll made before
downloading the updates into the system32 directory.
The system then tells me that I need to download updates KB899587, KB893756,
and KB896727!

Bob
Any help would be much appreciated.

Bob,
Thanks for responding, I had sent a email to Dell support about this problem
and they said I should reformat my hard drive. I do not think I will do that
just yet. I am pretty sure whatever problem the security updates cause it is
a microsoft issue, so maybe they will ready this thread and respond or figure
out what we can do short of wiping out the hadr drive and starting over.

I had the same issue with my Dell OPTIPLEX 170L with SP2 update.
After reboot, it come blue screen with said "the system stop to avoid the
program harm your system". and the NTFS problem. I had scan disk from other
computer passed and could see the file inside but failed to boot.
I restored to another hard disk from previous Ghosts backup and update
again. The problem came up again. I found the Cumulative Security Update
for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB896727) problem which never sucess
during downloading.
The Security Update seems to be affected most of the Dell PC.
