When you ran the System Update Readiness Tool (CheckSUR), did it run or
did you receive a message that it was not applicable ?
If it did run, check the log it created:

The error above is referring to this registry subkey

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Component

Most likely, the ERROR_ILLEGAL_CHARACTER is in the update.mum file or
it's stemming from the installed antivirus/security software preventing
it from being read properly.

Please check the above registry subkey and compare the Names and Data
against those listed below to ensure it's settings a are correct:
