Thanks for these suggestions - unfortunately they don't work. The first
suggestion deletes the log of files downloaded so I lose the records. Even
before that, at no time did the log show which updates had failed, only the
last successful one. If I check for updates now, the system shows I have
updates ready to install but when I hit the install button, Vista asks for
permission to continue and then I get the error message "Some updates were
not installed.... as above. Thanks again - any more suggestions welcome.

After repeating this procedure, find the file WindowsUpdate.log (usually in
c:\windows) and post the last hundred or so lines here.

try checking whether wuauclt.exe is present in C:\windows\system32\ .

i had the 80070002 problem, but then i realized my antivirus had deleted
"wuauclt.exe" since it was infected with a worm, and i restored it, and now
it works for me.

I'm not sure what's going on here, but the first thing I'd suggest you try is
reinstalling the Windows Update Agent. There's a link in KB949104 to the
installer (windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe):

You need to start a command window as administrator and run the following command:

windowsupdateagent30-x86 /wuforce

Then restart the machine and try updating again.

Hi Harry
No luck. I did as you suggested which didn't work and also did the same but
deleted the log and download files as suggested in the help files to make it
as clean as possible. Below are a couple of sections of the
windowsupdate.log file. First is the start of logging after the new agent.
