You set the updates for automatic install.

I am sorry to hear of your medical issues but the system did exactly
what it's supposed to do. It installed the updates and rebooted.

Please change the settings to "download but let me install".

There is no flaw, it's just many people do not understand the setting.

If you don't reboot the system after applying patches you leave the
system in a fragile state. It's not protected and the system may be
unstable.

Always assume a reboot will be required.

Always assume the worst thing will occur, which is why we make redundant
backups *mandatory*.
Me, I keep a handwritten address book that hasn't crashed yet <w>

Mow, Don't forget where you keep the "handwritten address book", that can also be a
disaster.
