I usually suggest no more than about 4 or 5 at a time with reboot after each
set with an older system.
But I have had no problems installing all Critical Updates on a new
computer.
You still may have other Critical Updates to install after the reboot.
Windows will keep the correct files so sequence is normally not an issue.
After all Critical Updates are installed, install Recommended updates you
have determined you need.
Do not install driver updates, instead get the drivers from the hardware
manufacturers website as needed.

I recently bought a new Dell PC, and when I go to Windows Update there is an
extensive list of updates to be installed. Can I install them all at once,
or should they be done individually? I'm used to updating Windows 98 where I
normally had only one, maybe two at the most, updates to install. Does WU
know how to go through a long list in the proper sequence and not overwrite
newer updates with older updates? Windows Update is a bit of a mystery to
me, so I will appreciate any enlightening comments and advice. Thanks in
advance.
