What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I will check on all of those links. I am not sure
if Symantec or McAffe were ever installed - McAffe may have came as a demo as
you said. Originally when the WinUpdates were failing they had AVG Free on
there. We have since uninstalled AVG and it still failed - so we put Avast
Free on there. Malwarebytes (and Defender) are/were on there as well. The
spyware and virus scans seem to come-up clean. We also tried a Windows Error
Check on the disk, and as mentioned tried re-installing WinXP, sp3 from the
local drive.

Who is "they"? Are you being paid to work on this computer?

Can I install Microsoft Security Essentials [or any other
anti-virus/anti-spyware application] to clean up my already-infected
computer?

That being said...

Open IE to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, select the CUSTOM option &
scan. Now click on the Update History link in the left-hand menu: What are
the KB numbers and install dates for the last three (3) update which
/successfully/ installed (e.g., KB987654 on 12 Dec-09)?

These suggestions worked great and fixed my problems - thanks ! I did the
crypto dll unreg and re-reg processes and also a few of the KB articles
including the link to the MS Fix It - Windows Updates Reset util and all is
well now. Thanks again, much appreciated !
