Hello DJT, you can download Dial-a-Fix from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...al-a-fix.shtml

Then put it in a folder and run it, and click on the "Flush
SoftwareDistribution" tab. That will flush out the cache of files that
Windows Update is using, - possibly that folder has gotten corrupted and
caused WU to hang and to grind away, eating up CPU cycles in the process.
Note also the Dial-a-Fix utility allows you to do other things quickly, such
as to fix Windows Update which is a next step you could try after doing the
SoftwareDistribution folder cache flush. Hope that helps ..

The CPU utilization issue may just be related to Trend trying to monitor
or scan the DataStore.edb file, located at WINDOWS\Software
Distribution\DataStore, since it's in use and locked.

Configuring Trend to *not* monitor nor scan DataStore.edb may have
mitigated the CPU issue without having to ' flush the Software
Distribution ' subfolder.

By that do you mean that MSE scanned the system and reported it as clean
or that the CPU issue is gone ?

If the CPU issue still exists, then suggest you rename DataStore.edb to
DataStore.old by stopping the Automatic Update service and the
Background Intelligent Transfer service (BITS) from either the Services
console or by running the commands listed below by clicking Start > Run,
enter each command one at a time, and then click the OK button or press
Enter after each command

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to WINDOWS\Software
Distribution\DataStore and rename DataStore.edb to DataStore.old
Restart both Services

net start wuauserv
net start bits

See if the CPU issue still exists. If it does not, then Trend likely
damaged or corrupted the previous DataStore.edb as XP will recreate a
new file with that same name when Automatic Updating is invoked or the
system visits one of the update sites.

IF you want to preserve the update history shown on the Windows or
Microsoft Update sites, you can run replace the newly created
DataStore.edb by running the *stop* service commands again, deleting the
newly created DataStore.edb, *rename* DataStore.old back to
DataStore.edb, and then run these commands from a command prompt to see
if DataStore.edb can be repaired ( Start > Run > enter
cmd
Click OK or press Enter )

At the command prompt, to check the integrity of DataStore.edb, enter
the below and then press Enter

esentutl /g %windir%\softwaredistribution\datastore\datastore. edb

If the message reports that the file is damaged or corrupted, enter the
below to attempt to repair it

esentutl /p %windir%\softwaredistribution\datastore\datastore. edb

NOTE: You can copy&paste the above commands to the Command Prompt by
Copying them , and then *right* click immediately following the > and
choosing Paste.
