Thanks for the info. Did not see that newsgroup. I posted it there.
Here is the link to the post with more detail about the issue.

You're new to the web interface for newsgroups I suspect? ; )

You need to use the CopyURL feature, e.g. click on the button that looks
like the Copy to Clipboard icon, in order to show the specific message
you want to refer to:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...603&sloc=en-us

Otherwise your link is no different from the one that Dave used to point
you to this WU NG.

FWIW I can give you a suggestion for diagnosing your "hang" but I don't have
your OS so I think you are going to have to continue cross-posting with it too
in order to get complete information for you. E.g. one suggestion might be
to compare your log with the log of the same update from someone else
who successfully installed that update on your OS.

It looks to me that some of the modules being updated were "in use"
(e.g. in the log you see copies involving *.tmp files) so another way to change
your log even without having another to compare would be to find out
what other processes had those modules already open and then, if feasible,
stop those processes before retrying to install the update. You can use the tasklist
command (in a cmd window) or Process Explorer for doing that analysis.
Alternatively, you could just try guessing that whatever those processes were
that perhaps they wouldn't be running if you retried the install under a safe boot.
Etc.

Thanks for the tip on posting links. The OS is Win 2003 Server. Since my
original Post this is what has happened.
I left the windows update window up on the computer. After about 24 hrs I
checked the computer again and it showed that the update failed and showed me
how to submit an issue to microsoft using a tool to collect my computers
info. I did submit the issue with microsoft and am awaiting there response
before I try to install that update again.
