You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
When you examine the %systemroot%\Windowsupdate.log file, you may see an entry for
one of the following errors:. 0x80096001
.. 0x80096005 . 0x80096010 . 0x800B0001 . 0x800B0003 . 0x800B0004 .

|I noticed only recently that Windows Automatic Update had failed to download
| and install updates automatically starting October 13. I identified the
| error: h1XAJNaO and followed the methods (where possible) in KB822798. That
| had the unfortunate effect of temporarily making my copy of Windows XP appear
| invalid (soon fixed)! However, I could not fix the toital absence of the
| Cryptographic Service and the fact that the crypt root certificates were not
| as described in every case in the KB article or that described in KB293781.
| I would appreciate some advice on how to fix this impediment to updating
| Windows and installing IE7 without having reinstall the system (I have only
| an OEM recovery CD).
|
| TIA

TaurArian ,

This much I knew already, teh error 0x8007f0da is mentioned in the subject
line (erroneously mistyped in the post), in fact I now know that I cannot
install ANY Windows updates or IE7, they all rely on Crypto Sevice for
validation before installing. Furthermore, there appears to be something
hinky which I can't isolate: after running System File Checker, some
applications began to fail and I had to backup a Ghost image form a couple a
days ago.

Does anyone know if Microsoft sent out a particularly problematical update
in the first weeks of October?

TIA
