Christian,
I'm having exactly the same problem. Went to microsoft support with the
problem and they had me transfer all my files and settings to another user
profile. It worked, I got the updates but the proflile was completely screwed
up because it was corrupted. After two days of trying to make it work I
surrendered and went back to my previous profile and still have the same
problem. If you find an answer let me know but you might try using another
user profile on your computer and downloading the updates from there.

That's an improvement over the (final) advice that I was given
after a failed troubleshooting session for a related symptom
--I couldn't use the WU Catalog site without getting that message,
XPsp2 timeframe. After several ineffectual attempts the last suggestion
was to try an XP Repair. That didn't work but did leave my system unbootable
so ultimately I had to reinstall Windows. Incredibly that was deemed a fix!
I characterize both suggestions metaphorically with: "You say you have
a squeaky door you want fixed? Here, let us demolish and rebuild your house
for you; that will fix your squeaky door problem." ; }

The problem with the "troubleshooting" session is that there was never
any diagnosis done, just guesses about what the symptom might be
caused by and which of the various existing prescriptions might be
minimally applied to try to change it. IMO it was a glaring indictment
against closed source software and its relatively poor supportability.
