OK, it only worked one time but evidently it didn't compact the files at
all, and now when I close WMail the same thing keeps happening. It wants to
compress the files and can't. How can this be fixed? Isn't there any MS
techs here anymore? This is the error:

Unfortunately Windows Mail has been pretty much abandoned by MS since
about July 2006. Windows Mail has some corruption issues which will
never be fixed.

There is a rather laborious way of resetting Windows Mail.
Follow this procedure:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62...-problems.html
Scroll down to the section "PROBLEM TWO: How to Backup and Reset
Windows Mail ".

Even if you manage to fix the problem for now, it will probably come back later.
Frankly, you'd be much better off simply upgrading to Windows Live Mail:

Will,

Have you tried downloading Windows Live Mail? It's a better looking Winmail.
You can remove the hotmail profile from 'Tools > Accounts' if you want just
Gmail for example.

It looks like you got it fixed in another thread. 3rd party program
interference again.

WMUtil only compacts the database files. The messages don't need
compacting.
