I ran your suggested set of commands - no change with Windows Update. I then
went and performed the suggested items at the web site you suggested. At
some point I started getting every once in a while suggested updates for my
hardware - not sure it had anything to do with any of the actions I took
because none had an immediate effect - no firewall problems. The hardware
updates suggested would come and go at different times as I ran through
various attempts at running Windows Update; I have now discovered and
installed 3 or 4 hardware updates using Windows Update; but still no
critical updates which I know from the bulletins and Belarc advisor I need
to install.

Looking at the log there seem to be Synch Update Failures accurring randomly
(e.g.error 0X80072ee2). I have even tried using different broadband wireless
connections to run Windows Update over (I have a laptop with wireless
capability) which seems to make no difference. Are you sure there is not a
Microsoft Server problem? I am computer literate (mainly Linux-based OS)
(retired computer programmer) and am willing to help solve this anyway I
can. I have enclosed an extract of the log from my last Windows Update run
showing the 0X80072ee2 Synch Update Failure.

By the way, is there a method to prune the WindowsUpdate.log file? - it's
getting really large.

When did you install WnXP SP3? Did you install WinXP SP3 manually or via

I installed manually an early version of SP3 before it became available from
Windows Update somewhere around June (I am always looking for new things -
it's my nature). Prior to installing SP3 I was running SP2 with no
problems - my laptop came with Windows XP Pro pre-installed several years
ago. Could SP3 be the source of the problem? Add/remove Programs says I
installed version 20080212.121911. I know I could not update BITS because it
is already part of SP3. Is there a site I should go to for learning how to
reinstall SP3. I am afraid that if I uninstall SP3 and am told to use
Windows Update to re-obtain it, I may be up the creek because Windows Update
is not working for me. (you have no idea how many time I have run Windows
Update since July just to be told there are no updates of any kind - when I
know based on Windows bulletins and Belarc that there are critical ones that
apply to my system). I would like to re-install SP3 only as a last resort.

You probably have a beta/RC build of WinXP SP3 installed. It was released
in early May-08, not 12 Feb-08 (20080212.121911).

1. Uninstall WinXP SP3 via Add/Remove Programs & reboot *twice*; cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249

2. Install WinXP SP3 RTM manually or via Windows Update & reboot *twice*.

3. See if the remaining updates will install now.

When I use Windows Update to search for critical updates only, the log
indicates no errors occurred but no updates are found. Could there be a
