Greetings John,
Well it does work, but the fonts are a set size in Messenger and aren't affected by the
changes. Unfortunately they are affected by the colour changes, and most have a lot of
Messenger blacked/whited out.
The best scheme to use (so you can see all the text, colour-wise) for Messenger is High
Contrast #2 (Accessibly Options in the Control Panel, Display tab, Settings button, I'm sure
you're familiar with this window).
What I'd suggest you do about the font sizes is to set Messenger to automatically sign in for
him, pop open a conversation window with anyone, right-click in the text area and choose
Change Font. Then set his font size to be large and click OK. Then both his and his
contact's text will be that size. Next, press the Alt key in any Messenger window to open up
the menu bar, choose the Tools menu, then Options, then Layout. Under the Contact List
heading, you'll find the Favorites are set to large and the Other Contacts are set to small.
Set the Other Contacts to the large size as well. That will at least make the contact's
images somewhat large so they're easily clickable.
Unfortunately the only way to control the other font sizes in Messenger is to make a custom
skin and use third-party tools like Messenger Plus, so that probably isn't an option.
For interest, I set this up here and took a screenshot:
