I have Media Center 2005, on a machine that's 1/3rd as powerful as yours and
don't see what you're seeing.

I don't see that either. Perhaps your disk is a bit slow, maybe? I've seen
problems here if the disk is badly fragmented... but I thought vista did
autodefrags on a regular basis (maybe that's just win7 tho.)

Given your specs (elided) don't specify any kind of video card, I'm betting
that it's onboard video... and, moreover, that it's done on the main CPU.
That is, I would argue, very likely the cause of the problem. If you can
get even a "cheap" video card to plug in to these, I bet that would resolve
this issue. (i.e. don't buy some outrageous video card. Any "cheap" video
card will remove the burden from the main CPU and likely resolve the issue
completely.)
