I have changed my automatic update option to notify me when they become
available, prior to downloading/installing them. ALIAS, are you saying to
turn off my anti-virus protection prior to the download/installation, then
immediately turn it back on after the completion of same?

I would set it to download but let me decide when and what to install if
you insist on auto update. Once it informs you that they are ready to
install, disable your AV's auto scan and decide which ones to install
and install them. If the updates don't require a reboot, reboot anyway
and that will enable your AV again.

I don't know about Alias~, but I would never ask you to turn your AV
off.

I don't, and don't seem to have a problem (I've used several different
AV products, depending on my mood).

And the reason you want your AV checking each bit while a program is
installing is? And the reason you think this will never create a problem
is? There is no risk whatsoever in disabling your AV while installing a
program unless you're on some dodgy web site at the same time which, of
course, is not recommended.
