"...since my tech guy said it was sure to cause problems."
Ask him exactly what problems.
More than likely he can not be very specific.

If you computer is clean of viruses, spyware and other malware and
also is running fine, installing a Service Pack should be no problem.
All problems, known and unknown should be resolved before installing
anything especially something as major as a Service Pack.

If you are unsure if your computer is ready for Service Pack 2, see
the Service Pack installation Checklist:

Viruses and other malware that gets on an unprotected computer can
cause downtime and worse.

Find out if there is a specific reason you should not have SP-2.
It is possible some software has a known issue with SP-2 but at this
late date, the software manufacturer should have fixed it.
More than likely the tech just is not knowledgeable as you think.

When installing a Service pack, start by backing up all important
date, something you are probably doing regularly anyways.
then pick a time where the computer can be free for maximum amount of
time.
You will probably need less than an hour for the actual installation,
but having more time available can help if you need the extra time for
unexpected issues.
