When attempting to install SP2 using Windows Update, I received the same
error. As a result, I requested help from MS Assisted Online Support and
received the following response--which enabled me to me install SP2
successfully. Good luck.

In your case log, you've indicated that you receive an error message when
installing Windows XP Service Pack 2. We shall be working to resolve this
specific issue through the course of the case. If I have misunderstood your
concern, please let me know.
Based on my experience, I suggest we visit the following link to download
and install Windows XP Service Pack 2 in Safe Mode.

Please save it to a folder that you can remember.
After downloading, please restart the computer to Safe Mode.
Restart the computer.
Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
Choose Safe Mode, and press Enter.
4. Log onto your user account and then double click the downloaded file to
install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
I believe the above information will address your needs. At this time, I
will close this case as resolved.
