Hi PA Bear. Yours is the most clever link I have seen. How do you set it
up? I want to use this technique to help people I support.

I volunteer at senior centers (I'm 70) here north of Dallas, conducting free
classes to answer any PC question the seniors have. Anti-virus (I recommend
Avast), how to do this or that, why won't my xxx work anymore, the
difference in the mouse's left and right buttons, a very broad spectrum of
issues. I am maybe a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 in PC knowledge.

I asked this Yahoo Mail question during Monday's class, for one of my
students, it appeared in the newsgroup in 5 minutes, and I had the 1st
answer in another few minutes. Therefore I was able to demonstrate how
valuable these news groups are, to the more advanced students. For those
who don't use Outlook Express or Windows Mail, I don't know how they can get
to the Microsoft newsgroups.

I have a copy of GoToAssist because of my need to help people who can't
bring their PC's to the class. I am usually the only one with a PC, to
demonstrate solutions, or show PC uses they are not aware of, like Skype
free Webcam video conversations or Digital camera picture uploads. I'll
bring an XP PC one time, a Vista PC the next, and then a W7 PC.

So the reason you see so many queries from me is because I try various
things, and occasionally get myself into troubles I can't solve. So thank
you and others for the help you provide. My queries usually start long
discussions, so others must be learning from my questions and the answers
they cause.

OE runs only in WinXP and prior; Windows Mail (WM) runs only in Vista.
Windows LIVE Mail (WLM) runs in just about any Windows version. To get your
free download of WLM - and as many of the other Windows Live Essentials
(Messenger, Calendar, Contacts, etc.) as you want, just go to
http://download.live.com

With any of OE/WM/WLM (or a third-party news client) installed, just click
here:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof....vista.general

That one click should:
1. Start your default newsreader;
2. Create a News Account for you on the Microsoft public news server,
which is free and does not require a logon;
3. Connect you to THIS newsgroup (vista.general) - and it will offer to
let you Subscribe to the group when you exit;
4. Download the 300 newest messages in this NG; and
5. Display the latest message in the Reading Pane.

Later, you can click Tools, View, Actions and other choices on the Menu Bar
(which is hidden by default but will appear if you just press <Alt>), just
like in OE/WM, and customize WLM in many ways to fit the way YOU use
newsgroups (and email).

If your user is running WinXP or older, Outlook Express (OE) is available as
the default newsreader. If your user is running Vista, Windows Mail is
available as the default newsreader. Windows 7 user would have to install a
Mail/News Client (e.g., Windos Live Mail) and make it their default.

Just clicking on a News link will open the computer's default newsreader to
the newsgroup; e.g.,
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...dowsxp.general

the "Google groups" is a good solution for him.

I use Windows Mail both in Vista and in my two W7 laptops.

Outlook Express and Windows Mail are two of the many programs that
have news reading functionality. Some people may prefer one of those;
others (me, for example) have other preferences. I personally use
Forte Agent.

There are many choices, and if you would look at the headers of those
posting here, you would see what newsreader they use. For example,
your header says

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6002.18005

and mine says

X-Newsreader: Forte Agent 6.00/32.1186

Some of the newsreaders are for sale, others are freeware. Many of
them are better at some things than others are, so which is best for
you depends in part on what newsgroups you frequent. As a single
example, some newsreaders do binary newsgroups very well, and others
(outlook express, for example) do them poorly.
