Lots of posts about this - many people affected. Not sure why AU suddenly
stopped working but the following solution posted by JR (thanks!) works for
me:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=21&ln=en

I would still like to see an "official" solution from MS on this. Need to
increase robustness of WU/AU. Especially if most people have AU set to
download and install w/o user intervention. This may mean that users are not
getting the latest security patches and they are not aware of it. The user
is not notified after any AU failures - you have to go look in the
windowsupdate.log file...

I personally get error "0x8DDD0018"

It says that Automatic Updates isn't activated. This was initially true
because I hate it when the automatic update program heckles me relentlessly
when I don't want to update. So I disabled it.

I never disabled BITS or Event log but somehow BITS was disabled.

So I enable and start Automatic Updates... and then I start BITS up and
Windows Update still gives me the same stupid error.

Anyone know why? I didn't disable anything else in the service manager
except for messenger to stop those awful net send messages from appearing,
but I don't think that's ever caused problems before.

Hi

You did set the "Automatic Updates" to "Automatic" and not manual?

The "Automatic Updates" service needs to be set to "Automatic",
BITS can be set to "Manual".

If you have the correct configuration listed above, and still get the
error 0x8DDD0018, try this:

1. Click Start.

2. Choose Run.

3. In the Run box, type (or copy/paste from this post)

regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll

(note the space there in the middle)

4. Click OK.

Do the same for this two DLLs as well:

qmgr.dll
qmgrprxy.dll

After the regsvr32 command, start regedit.exe (from Start/Run)
and locate the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv

If you find a DeleteFlag value there, delete the DeleteFlag value.
