Use the rollback driver feature in device manager to remove that driver
and go to the previous one. As a general rule don't get driver updates
from the windows update site, get it from the device manufacturer's web
site, and only if there is a problem with the current driver which you
think the new one fixes or it has a feature you must have.

Yup, I got the auto update last night as well, Now I have no game sound in
Half Life 2!!! I have music and other games work but not hl2. I'm many hours
into this game,do I have to reinstall it again? Why is Microsoft sending me
auto BETA updates ? and how do I get out of this mess?

Roll back the driver and don't use WU for driver updates anymore. Right
click on My Computer, choose Properties, Hardware tab, Device Manager.
Expand the Sound, video and Game section. Doubleclick on the Realtek
entry, click the Driver tab, then click on Roll Back Driver.

Thanks so much Rock, I rolled back the driver and the problem went away. I
have found that since the Realtek update and the NET service pack 3
autoupdate (which came together) I can now no longer change my desktop photo
backdrop, I now get an error message saying that my Rundll32.exe is not
working! I have never had a single problem with my computer until the
December 23 auto updates from Microsoft. Should I try to do a restore point
to some date before the 23rd or is there another way around this.....needless
to say I'm not letting my computer auto update any more!
thanks for any thoughts on this.

I recieved notification that "Realtek AC '97 Audio cannot be upgraded" then
lost all audio from all sources (but I didn't lose Picture It). Rock's fix
brought everything back normal. Whew! Thank you

Thanks for your help! I have had sound problems while using Flight Simulator
2004, since I got the Windows Update. I rolled back the driver and now
everything is OK and back to normal. Whew!
