there's at least 3 versions of the driver (high def version, anyway,
which i use). try going back a version. the first time i loaded 1.72
my headphones stopped working. the thing is if i don't uninstall the
old driver and just let the 1.72 load, the headset now works. go figure.

I've already tried that with version 1.69 and 1.70, i dont know if it would
help with 1.72? When i load the older version, the setup program dosent
continue unless i choose "yes" to delete the current version, i hope this
make sense.

Have you tried this?

Right-click the Sound icon in the notification area, and choose Recording
Devices. On the Recording tab of Sound, right-click an empty spot of the
window, and put a checkmark next to "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show
Disconnected Devices". Do the same for the Playback tab. If you see the
microphone or headphones, right-click those, and choose enable.

uninstall the driver from the device manager
then install the chipset driver and the audio driver. are you sure it´
realtek?
another thing you can try is to right click the device and click updat
driver, and let it look for the driver automatically on the internet

If I were you, I would start from square one, beginning with a full manual
uninstall:

1.Download the latest Realtek HD Audio drivers (ver. 1.75), and save to a folder
on your Desktop, from here:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Audio%20Codecs

2. In Control Panel > Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers,
right click on the Realtek HD Audio Device and select UNINSTALL ****be SURE to
check the box to delete the driver files in the uninstall confirmation box****.

3. In Control Panel > Programs and Features, right click on the Realtek HD
Audio Drivers and select UNINSTALL (Windows will install generic HD audio
drivers -- Go back to Device Manager and UNINSTALL the generic HD audio device.)

4. REBOOT (Windows will reinstall the generic HD audio drivers again -- IGNORE.)

5. Right click the downloaded new Realtek driver file and press the "Unblock"
button and the "Apply" and "OK buttons. Double click and install the new Realtek
drivers.

6. REBOOT

7. Go back to Control Panel > Sound, and configure your Recording and Playback
devices using the Properties and Configure buttons. Be sure to right click in an
empty area of both windows, and check both "Show Disconnected Devices" and "Show
Disabled Devices".

I had the same problem when Vista updated my audio drivers (withou
warning or consent!)

At first I ended up running system restore and turning off window
update, which fixed my problem temporarily, but windows update someho
managed to re-enable itself and I was back to square one.

I was able to fix the problem with the new AC'97 drivers and my mi
however. It turned out that the new drivers changed my microphone por
into a line-in port, but there's an easy way to remedy this.

- First open the Sound Manager (which is availible with the lates
version of the driver) and click on the "Speaker Configuration" tab.

- This shows how your sound ports on your back panel are currentl
set up. To change this, click on the oval UAJ button, your red mi
port should be highlighted.

- Click on it, and change "Line In" to "Microphone"

I hope you were having the same problem, if so, this should fix it
