If Windows has an auto update during the night which I have the auto update
set at,the next morning I get the "Windows Shutting Down" screen just
hanging.I have to turn the power off to get rid of it.The updates do go
through though, except the Office 2003 updates which I still can't resolve.

I have a desktop that hangs after installing KB956841 or KB956803. The other
desktop is fine. Are you running XP media edition by any chance?

Is Zone Alarm installed ? If not, look to the installed
antivirus/security suite as being the cause for the hanging reboot.

From both KB954861 and KB956803:

To prevent the hangup at shutdown, stop the Automatic Update service first.
Click Start > Run > type in or copy & paste the below into the Open: line

net stop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter

How to troubleshoot an update installation by using log files in Office 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884290

The two main causes for Office update installation issues are
the Microsoft Office Source Engine (Ose.exe) is disabled or corrupted
or, the Local Installation Source has changed:

You receive an "Error 80070643" error message when you try to update
Office 2003 by using Software Update Services
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903772

Office updates are not successfully installed if you deploy updates by
using Windows Server Update Services or the Microsoft Update Web site
after the path of the local installation source changes
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903776

REMEMBER, you can contact MS for no-charge support in getting the
security updates for Office installed. See my previous post for the info
on that, blueoyster.
