I am trying to install Visual Studio and I continue to get a message telling
me that another program needs to reboot the system before I can proceed with
my VS installation. Obviously I have tried rebooting the system. What can I
do to clear this up?

Why ar you posting this to Windows Media Center group? Or if you are trying
to install VS on a Media Center machine - that is a very bad approach - if
I'm not mistaken - it's recommended that we don't even install Outlook on a
Media Center.

I'm not sure where you heard that. Media Center PCs are still general
purpose PCs and can have anything installed on them - all my office and home
PCs are Media Center PCs and have Office, Visual Studio and other apps
installed.

Grand parent poster should post to a visual studio newsgroup to get help
with his/her problem.

My bad then...for some reason - I beleived it would be a very poor choice to
install development software on it. I actually have been avoiding
installing M$ Office on the box - but from what you are reporting - I should
be just fine.

How then do you propose that someone develop applications for Media Center?

I have in the past recommended what you suggest if, and only if, it is
practical for you to have a second O/S on the computer for general computing
purposes. The only reason for this recommendation was that most people have
a tendancy to install a bunch of junk which increases the possibility of
installing incompatible software with the DVD decoders or drivers and also
increases the liklihood of fragmentation on the O/S drive.

Simply put, if you are having issues with MCE it is much easier to determine
the cause of the problem if you only have the base O/S and drivers installed
on the system. MCE is certainly capable of running all of the Windows
software that will reasonably run on Windows XP.

On one of my home built MCE systems I have the following operating systems:

1. Windows MCE - Used for MCE exclusively
2. Windows XP Professional - Used for development
3. Windows 2000 - Used for development
4. Windows XP Home - Used for games

Of course, I also have several 300 GB drives on my system for a total of
over 1TB of storage -so I have space to spare! I also use Virtual PC 2004
and have a bunch of other operating systems that I develop for on them.

-Pete
