receive error 0x800A1391

This repeats every time I attemp Windows Update.
The MS Trusted sites have been entered
I have cleared cache, turned off ZoneAlarm, turned on Microsoft Firewall.
All I get is:
"When you try to access the Windows Update site you receive error 0x800A1391"
What Next? Please HELP

Windows Version is ____ ? [2K, XP, Vista, etc.]

By ' Windows Update ', if you're referring to access to the Windows
Update site, then Vista is eliminated.
Make sure that the ActiveX software component is installed, at the
latest version, is enabled, and is registerd correctly.

Open Internet Options from within Control Panel
Click the Programs tab
Click the Manage Add-ons button
The Show: field will be 'Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer'.
Look for 'WUWebControlClass' under Name
Is it showing as Enabled ? If not, Enable it.
If the system is connected to the net, click once on it, now click the
"Update ActiveX" button under 'Update'.
What happens ?

The 0x800A1391 error code has been associated with a type of malware
infection in the past. Specifically, what was known as Cool Web Search.
When was the system last scanned for the presence of malware with an up
to date antivirus program and what program was it ?

Clicked on MuW, but only Delete and radio buttons to disable
ZoneLabs Security Suite is updated daily, last complete scan was Friday at 8
pm

The issue is most likely directly related to the above, George.

At the bottom of the Manage Add-ons window, to the right of the Settings
area [Enable, Delete], is the Update area. That's where you need to see
if there is an update for MUWebControl Class.
Even if the system is opted in to Microsoft update there should still be
a WUWebControl Class ActiveX component present in IE's add-ons.

A post from this newsgroup dated 1/7 by Feline Cat shows that unblocking
mobile code in ZLSS resolved her issue. Not sure if that even applies to
the current version, though.

0x800A1391 Microsoft JScript runtime error
The trust verification action specified is not supported by the
specified trust provider.

Please check in Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel to see if
KB942840 is installed. If not, download and save it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-F09D3D99766E

When the download is done close all open programs and browsers.
Install WindowsXP-KB942840-x86-ENU.exe
I'm curious to see how ZLSS reacts to the installation of that
jscript.dll. Make sure that it is allowed and not blocked, please.
Reboot the system afterwards and try Windows Update once more.

Recent health challenges have slowed me down. When I attempt to follow
your instructions there are no file names matching your advice. Would it be
better to just uninstall the ZoneAlarm Security Suite completely before doing
a full Windoows Update?
One other difficulty is the HTTP 403 window instead of the window that I
want to reach. This affecting online filing of my taxes, as well as research
that I am attempting to complete.
Would you recommend a freshstart without the security suite, just the
Windows Security?

Sorry about the health issue, George and not getting to this sooner.
I would heartily recommend removing *all* traces of Zone Alarm from the
system. Please visit their web site to learn how to do this as ZA tends
to leave behind either a Service or a file that will still cause
internet connectivity issues.
Make sure that the native XP firewall is enabled after the removal of ZA
and, after ensuring that connectivity is restored, suggest you either
install Avast or AntiVir, both free, for an antivirus.

You may need to reset the Winsock stack after removing ZA, do this by
going to Start > Run > type in cmd
Click OK or press Enter
At the prompt type these commands in, pressing Enter after each one

netsh winsock reset
exit

Restart the system and the Winsock will rebuild itself.
