What POP3 mail service are you using? Yahoo, Gmail, etc.?
Have you set to leave a copy of message on the server (Tools, Accounts,
Mail, Properties, Advanced)?
If you use the Mail services web mail to look at the account, are there
any messages in the Inbox there?
With POP3, the mail server controls what messages are available for
download. Normally, that's just what's in the server Inbox. In the
case of Yahoo, there is a setting on the web interface to also download
the Spam folder.
If you use the option to leave a copy on the server, then your mail
client (e.g. WLM) tracks the Ids (UIDL) of message that it has
previously downloaded. Then each time it checks for new messages, it
must ask the server the id of each message still on the server. Then
the mail client checks its list to see if the message has been
previously downloaded. If there are 1,000 still in the Inbox on the
server, then the mail client must ask for the id of each an every one of
those 1,000 messages to determine if there are any that it doesn't have.
That's the way POP3 works.
If you are leaving messages on the server and WLM starts downloading
messages that it previously downloaded, then one of two things have
happened.
1) WLM has lost or corrupted its record of message ids and so doesn't
know that it has previously downloaded some messages.
2) Something has happened on the mail server to alter the message UIDL,
which is not supposed to happen.
One person reported that WLM would start downloading messages from Yahoo
even though there were no messages in Yahoo. That would indicate that
the person either has his anti-virus set to scan e-mail or was running
an anti-spam program. In either of those cases, the anti-virus or
anti-spam sets itself up as the POP3 server to WLM. So that program
could be feeding WLM some messages that it has from some storage.
