Recent critical cumulative update is causing me problems

It goes through the upgrade cycle, tells me to restart my computer, then
after the restart, it says I need to update again and goes through the cycle
again over and over and over and over.

There has been nothing that indicates the upgrade did NOT take place yet it
keeps trying to update the same thing over and over.

I've sent a private email to Microsoft requesting help on the matter and
have posted a couple of other places online as well.

So far nada.

I can't even load the MS Explorer and my scanner is now disabled, who knows
what else isn't working.

It sure seems like this update was ill conceived.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can get through this?

Have you moved the Program Files folder onto another partition than
the one where Windows is installed on?

Which applications are running in the background while installing
updates? Any Personal Firewall software and the like?

I have not added any partitions to the hard drive, it's a very normal setup.
I've tried updating under a number of conditions. Without any other
software opened, with Firefox opened and with Firefox and Photoshop opened.
I see no differences in the response of the update.

I have a LinkSys Router with a firewall on that but I doubt that is causing
a problem. I also do have McAffee running.

Please disable that one *completely* and try again.

I had a similar problem and disabled automatic updates and switch to custom
updates. Select only 1 update at a time. Update it and return for the 2nd
update.
It's time consuming, but it works.
