Recent Docs List no working

My Recent Documents list is not working.
Files accessed do not save to the list and when I access a file thru the list
it is then deleted from the list.
I have had Vista Home Basic and latest Microsoft Office for several months
and it was working up until the last few days.
Could an update have changed something?
Is there somewhere I can turn it back on?

Try this: Start Button/right click/Properties/Start Menu tab - is the box
checked for "Store and display a list of recently opened files"? Even if
it is checked, try unchecking it/ok/repeat and put a check in that box/ok.

Yes tried that, all it did was delete any files that where still in the list.
I the accessed a file modified it and saved. It did not turn up in recent
items list.

Further to that didn't work, I the had a look in file that had list of files
that had been modified recently (in search) and opened a few files there. Any
non Office files appeared in recent items list but not Office files. Could it
be aproblem in Office update? Not sure if have had one recently as is on auto.
Office Diagnostics came up clean.

Some Office files are saving to list, they seem to be older files not
accessed recently
could be still in older format? Mainly having trouble with excel files but
not all.

yes had a look at article.
Doesn't seem to apply to Vista and M Office 2007
wasn't able to find Tweak UI in control Panel.
If you have further info would appreciate it.
Problem is in
Start, Documents, recent items- not all docs going to this list as they have
in the past.
Not File,Recent docs in any particular office program.

If You mean as suggested by John Hanley
above you in replies.
I 've done that and restarted Computer.
Also have tried to system restore.
This is another problem, I get error message that restore was not completed
or something. However Recent list did regenerate to list prior to
turning off and on.
