I downloaded definition update for windows defender (KB915597) and received
an error 0x80508007. I've rebooted, but the update install still failed.
What do I need to do? Thanks

Windows version?

Could your computer be low on memory? Try running Disk Cleanup & then
reboot.

Can you update Defender manually via
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/ ??

[Did you also post this in WinXP General?]

I have had exactly the same problem with the same error code. The download
takes place but the install fails. This has happened before a few weeks back
and also with defender updates. More recent updates until this last have
installed OK. My belief is that it is a bug with Microsoft updater, defender
or the update itself. Anyone at Microsoft care to comment? Sorry I cannot
offer a solution.
regards
Tony

Re low on memory--I just put in a 512 memory stick, what things shold i look
for to cause low memory? I will; Do as you suggest and use disk clean up. And
I don't know how to update manually, i went to the site you suggested, but I
don't see what I should do to do the manual update. I'm a very new newbie so
I apologize for what may seem basic questions. Thank you

This is a "me too".

Tried stopping all other programs and retrying - still failed.

Sysinternals Process Explorer shows plenty of free memory (I have 2GB of RAM
with 1.3GB free) - what else could it be?
I have recently installed XP SP3, but previous Windows Defender updates and
several other updates installed successfully since that.

This failure seems to be exclusive to the latest version of KB915597
(Definition 1.35.716.0). Is there something wrong with that?

Tony thank you so much for seeing the same problem. I'm new, I thought i did
something wrong. Its doing the exact thing you described, download ok,
install fails. It's been suggested that I'm low on memory, but that doesn't
seem possible, I seldom use the computer. Anyway, thanks, I don't feel so
alone ! So, we just wait for MS to look into it?

I have reproduced this problem (error 0x80070643). Users may encounter this
problem when updating Defender via Automatic Update, Windows Update, or from
within Defender (Check for updates function).

NB: Defender will NOT be happy and its "Alert!" icon will continue to appear
in Notification Area until an update is successfully installed. This does
NOT mean that Defender is not working/protecting your machine.

I have alerted MS and the Defender team to this apparent bug via private
channels.

I had the same problem as well. The download runs fine, but the install
still fails. My system is NOT low on memory. I have done most, if not
all, of the Windows Defender updates for the past year or two and do not
recall having a problem before.

Glad it is not just me.

Thanks.
