I’ve been running Windows XP SP2 for a long time. I have tons of apps
installed and it has been totally solid. I bought my XP direct from MS.
I loaded security updates over the weekend. Things seemed fine but Monday
morning my machine would not boot (all the way), just kept rebooting when the
graphical xp logo normally appears. Last known good configuration was no
help. Chkdsk from the recovery console got it booting again but it is
severely damaged. 80% of the services don’t run, event properties windows
don’t open, and no install/uninstall, can’t system restore. I even replaced
the registry files by hand, but that was no help also.
One thing I noticed when I do a shutdown the disk is still active when the
power shuts off. I know this was a problem in the past that shutdowns
occurred faster than the disks could write/flush data, has this problem come
back? (my machine is not that fast, Athlon xp 1800+ Western digital UDMA100
120 and 80 GB drives) (and of course I tried to install the western digital
‘life guard’ or something like that and I can install because the windows
installer service won’t run)
More info: I think the root of my problems is the rpc service, everything
depends on it and it won’t start. Of course I don’t know why because I can
read the detail of any of the events in the event viewer. (…and I’ve tried
all these things from msconfig diagnostic, and safe mode boots) I use
Zonealarm, Computer Associates Protection suite.
Anyone else feel my pain?
