Uninstall the ATI drivers and download/install the latest drivers from ATI's support web page for your video card model. Also, just for good measure... Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this): SuperAntiSpyware http://www.superantispyware.com/ MalwareBytes http://www.malwarebytes.com/ After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products, if you wish. Reboot. Start button --> RUN and type in: %SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv --> Click OK. Start button --> RUN and type in: %SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll --> Click OK. Start button --> RUN and type in: %SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv --> Click OK. Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86): http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237 .... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root of the C:\ drive, do the following: Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications. Start button --> RUN and type in: %SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE --> Click OK. (If asked, select "Run") --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"... Reboot. Download/Install the latest Windows Installer: http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/d...displaylang=en Reboot. Log on as a user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan... (Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages - first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can release the CTRL key after clicking each time.) Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates (deselect any others) and install it. Reboot again. If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a time. The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend against the "Windows Search" one. I would completely avoid the Optional Hardware updates. Then some general cleanup... How to use Disk Cleanup http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312 How to scan your disks for errors http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 How to Defragment your hard drives http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848 Come back - let us know if that worked. .... Really - come back and let everyone know if that worked. Also - you may want to look into improving (starting?) your backup regime. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

How is this related to Windows Update, please?

Well there are three relationships (loosely):
1) The only auto updates are MS and the Virus app. 2) I have unloaded the virus app, the proplem is still there. 3) I could not find any place to turn? I think the last one is the most important. So I come here for help. What update(s) did you install just before you started getting the STOP errors? Does uninstalling the update(s) resolve the problem? <QP> 0x0000000A: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Typically due to a bad driver, or faulty or incompatible hardware or software...Technically, this error condition means that a kernel-mode process or driver tried to access a memory location to which it did not have permission, or at a kernel Interrupt ReQuest Level (IRQL) that was too high. (A kernel-mode process can access only other processes that have an IRQL lower than, or equal to, its own.) </QP> Source & much more: http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm This STOP error is often caused by a hijackware infection. What anti-virus application or security suite is/was installed and is the subscription current? What anti-spyware applications? This is the Stop Error you are seeing: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms797128.aspx This link is written in technical terms bit it basically is saying there is a driver problem. Was there any more information on the line below this one? 0X000000CD 0X8B51B000 0X00000000 0X8053A593 0X00000000 ?? You can often see a driver named on this line ?? Are any devices malfunctioning? Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information. Open Components under System Summary and click on Problem Devices. Is anything listed there? Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties, Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code? -- Hope this helps.
