Hello,

I've recently installed the following updates:

Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - December 2007
(KB890830) Wednesday, December 12, 2007

Windows XP Update for Windows XP (KB942763) Wednesday, December 12, 2007

Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB941569) Wednesday, December
12, 2007
Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows
XP (KB942615) Wednesday, December 12, 2007

Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB941568) Wednesday, December
12, 2007

Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB944653) Wednesday, December
12, 2007

As a result I can no longer use a link in a web page to send email, with
error message indicating default mail client is not properly installed. I use
Outlook Express, and it is in fact designated as the default e-mail handler
both within it and Internet Explorer, as it always has been.

Short of de-installing the recent updates, can anyone provide insight as to
how this may be happening and/or how to fix it for good?

Thanks,

John

Is MS Outlook also installed?

Is OE selected as the default in Start | [Control Panel | Add/Remove
Programs | ] Set Program Access and Defaults?

Hello PA Bear,

MS Outlook is available to me as part MS Office 2003, but I have never
'installed' it. and yes, OE is the default in ' Set Program Access and
Defaults' as are other Microsoft Windows programs.

1.

2b. (WinXP) [Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs >] Set Program Access and
Defaults > Email > ...

1. Assuming you don't use any of its functionality, Remove Outlook from your
install of Office.

2a. http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx; then...

2b. http://www.oehelp.com/oelnk.aspx

3. Make sure OE is still the default for E-mail in all configurations in Set
Program Access and Defaults.

4. Reboot.

Is OE still set as the default in Set Program Access and Defaults?

If still no joy, see:

Thanks for the advice PA Bear. I followed everything, in order, and to the
letter. However, nothing resolved it. The registry entry was already in place
by the way.

If it makes any difference, I'm having a similar problem opening Windows
Media Player from a hyper link in IE, where I did not before this recent
series of updates. It too is already established as the default media player
to Windows.

Millions of phone calls, and only in the Phillippines?

Did they say how to avoid reinstalling after re-enabling Automatic Updates?

If what you posted is true (doubtful), I think some MS Tech reps should be
fired.

Please post the complete error message. (And 5 will get you 10 that it
mentions Address Book.)

Hello again,

The error when I attempt to open email hyperlink:
"Could not perform this operation because the default email client is not
properly installed"
The error when attempting to open media player (via hyperlink?) in IE is
the standard 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage'.

Crossposted to OE General newsgroup.

I'll deal with the "default email client" issue in this thread. Please
begin a new thread in either IE General or
microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player newsgroup about the other issue.

Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4

If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook (NB: no space) and is
its value set to 1 (one)?

If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office).
Change the value to 0 (zero) and all should be well. (If that DWORD is not
present, don't create it, and don't alter any other DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.

named UseOutlook (NB: no space). There is 'default'(value not set),
'firstrun'(1), OlKContactRefresh(0), and OlKFolderRefresh(0).
