Recognition of services

I have the Automatic Updates and BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer
Service) set to "Manual" on my XP system. Event Log is a system process so
cannot be shutdown.

Before I start the windowsupdate.com site I start the three services
mentioned above. Windowsupdate.com then responds by telling me that I don't
have the Automatic Updates, BITS and Event Log services started. It gives me
instructions on how to start them.

What is going wrong here ? Does the update site REALLY need to have these
services set as Automatic ? Why does the site not recognise that the services
ARE started on my machine ?

Any answers would be gratefully accepted.

Hi George,

The Automatic Updates service must be set to Automatic (BITS and Event Log
can be set to Manual) or Windows Update returns the "Windows Update cannot
continue because a required service application is disabled" error message.
