Whenever I plug in a usb drive the computer "dings" but the drive
doesn't show up in explorer.
The only way that I can use the drive is to re boot.
Ive tried to use install hardware but it says that it's busy installing
something.
How can I get the drive recognized.

It may be "installing". Vista may be searching the net for drivers.
Give it 5mins & see what happens.

Try going to device manager and set the drive option to write caching. I had
that issue once and this fixed it.

I was having a problem with some of my USB memory devices, and a USB hard
drive. In device manager I deleted all the USB controllers, rebooted, they
reinstalled, and all was well.
