Can anyone please recommend their preference for defragmentation
software and why they prefer it over the others.

Many thanks!

Vista's defrag. Why take a chance with your NTFS using a vendor to maybe
save a few minutes?

Vista's defrag is all you'll ever need. I would suggest setting it to
run nightly instead of once a week as it is scheduled by default.

If you would prefer to buy one, then pop for the money to buy
Diskeeper 2008. I doubt that there is a better one available.

Google to your heart's content for kudos of each.

Forgot to mention: I popped for Diskeeper myself.

Alot of people seem to recommend Diskeeper. I've had a look at it and
it seems to be strong for automatic defragmenting (and not for manual
defrag) which is not something I like. I just prefer have it running
once a week overnight. Perhaps Perfectdisk would be a better option
for me?

I have been using Diskeeper for quite awhile - very happy with it - worth
the money IMO.

Diskeeper in my experience is overpriced and garbage. Microsoft's
defrag is a joke and very slow. UltraDefrag is quite, fast and free. I
run it daily and don't even know it's running. doesn't slow down the
system at all.

I'll whisper now, so the fanboy morons don't hear. It's Open Source.
You know, what the Microsoft faithful hate with a passion. <snicker>

Download the trial version (30 days) and run it through the paces.

You can have it run automatically 24x7 or however you like: you choose
the hours it will run and not run. When it's running, you won't even
know it.

You can also run it manuall only, if you like.

It's great.

Diskeeper does manual defrag. If you are looking for bells and whistles then go for some other one. Diskeeper is the best defragmenter available
