Recording sound on Vista

Hello,

On previous flavours of Windows I've had trouble recording sound via Line In on
the sound card because some programs running in the background - programs I
never used or wanted - interrupted the software doing the recording (one of the
culprits was something in Office).

What system settings (if any) do I need and what background tasks do I need to
kill, and how do I kill them, to ensure an interruption free recording. I
noticed that Vista did a lot of disk thrashing when I first got it, though no
applications started by me were running, so there are obviously things happening
in the background.

David

No need to kill any OS functions. Just use Sound Recorder. The disc thrashing
you had observed when you first got your computer was most likely the Search
Index updating itself.

Sound Recorder looks like an incredibly simple thing. I'm accustomed to software
that has a few more features, like Goldwave. Are you saying that Sound Recorder
does something special to prevent interruptions?

And it's exactly that sort of thing that has caused Goldwave to occasionally
skip parts of the incoming sound on previous Windows (it could have even been
Ofiice's file-find that I referred to in my first post). That's what I want to
avoid, so I'd like to kill it unless you know it won't be a problem.

I could just try it, but skips can be rare, so when you are recording an hour or
two of music and you aren't sure it all worked you have to listen to the whole
lot and then re-record it if there are problems. That's a lot of wasted time, so
I want to know it will work before I start.

Stick with Goldwave (I have ver 5.x). Sound Recorder is the barest of
minimums.
