Recover mail using OST file

I had to rebuild a SBS 2008 server and now it's back online and ready to
restore all Windows profiles on the clients. All the clients have Outlook
and their OST files. What's the best way to get mail back on Exchange? I
re-joined one desktop so far to the domain but when I brought up Outlook, it
tells me I don't have permission to access the folder.

Thanks for your help.

This doesn't indicate that it applies to the later Outlook versions, but
give it a try. I'm pretty sure this is still the correct way to do it.

You cannot disjoin from the old domain or join a different domain. The best
way I have found is to pull the network cable and then open outlook. If you
were in cached mode, it should simply open the OST file, which you then save
to a PST file.

Agreed.

If you have removed the PC from the domain or cannot otherwise open Outlook
in offline mode, about your only option is to purchase a 3rd party recovery
tool that can convert an OST file to a PST so you can import it. I've used
Nucleus Technologies' Kernel Recovery for OST previously with solid results:

Might also want to experiment with this less costly utility, Recovery Toolbox for Outlook, which
saved my bacon a couple of years ago. See my blog for Nov 26, 2007

Hello,

Thanks for your post and also thanks for others' suggestions.

If the contents of the mailbox are missing for any reason or have been lost, the messages may have to be restored from the OST. This involves adding personal folders (PSTs) to the profile, starting the client offline,
and manually moving messages from the OST to the PST then back to the mailbox.

For more information about restoring messages from an OST, click the following KB287497 article:

287497 How to use the Inbox Repair Tools to recover e-mail messages in Outlook 2002, Outlook 2003, and Outlook 2007
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287497/en-us

Note, this article helps you use the Inbox Repair Tool (Scanpst.exe) to recover folders and items from a corrupted Personal Folders (.pst) file or offline folder (.ost) file in Microsoft Outlook 2002, Outlook 2003, and
Outlook 2007. The examples in the sections show how to use the Inbox Repair Tool on a .pst file. However, you can use the same procedures for an offline folder (.ost) file.

More information:

Hope this helps.

As per my opinion you should convert OST to PST to access with Outlook.

You have to convert Outlook .ost file into .pst file to access its components. In a related situation i used Stellar Phoenix Convert OST PST software, the tool works efficiently for me. In addition it also converts all my encrypted ost files to pst files

To recover ost file and access it outside of the original profile that create it, .ost file should be converted in to pst file. To perform the conversion you can use third party convert ost to pst tool, that are very efficient and easy to use with Outlook resembling GUI>
