Recovering Files from a vista backup

I was having many error using Vista so i used the back up program in vista to
back up to another internal hard drive. It backed up to the drive complete.
Then I formatted the main drive and reinstalled Vista. Now I want to bring
those files back and the backup retore program will not find it. and i can
see the drive in my explorer. How can i get my personel files back....HELP
